Top-level horses No Nay Never and its contender remain unchallenged following a victorious performance by Never So Brave at York, ensuring a 1-2 finish for their lineage.
Never So Brave, a 3-year-old colt, has added another feather to Juddmonte's cap with his victory in the City of York Stakes. This marks the 17th individual Group 1 win for Juddmonte's broodmare sire, Oasis Dream.
Bred by the late Christopher Hanbury at Triermore Stud in County Meath, Never So Brave was sent to Andrew Balding's Kingsclere stable after being trained by Radory Stud at the same location. As a two-year-old, he finished runner-up in each of his starts, including to a subsequent Group 1 winner. Last season, he won two of his five starts.
Never So Brave's dam, Hasili, is a highly influential sire and broodmare sire, having produced five individual Group/Grade 1 winners and a Group 2 winner. Hasili is also the dam of Belle Of Georgia, who was sold for 420,000gns at Book 1. Never So Brave's half-sister, Pirate Jenny, also made a name for herself with her win in the Listed Sweet Mimosa Stakes.
Tarriance, another Group 1 winner, might have been a formidable competitor for Never So Brave. Sired by Juddmonte, Tarriance prevailed in a narrow finish at York, initiating a double for Balding. Colin Keane was on board Tarriance during its York race. Tarriance is a half-brother to Listed winner and Grade 3-placed Western Reserve.
Visit, Tarriance's dam, is an Oasis Dream half-sister to Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Promising Lead. Visit is out of the Bahrain Trophy winner Arrive, a Kahyasi full-sister to Juddmonte blue hen Hasili.
Never So Brave's gelding at the end of the last season might have contributed to his improved performance this season. He made his debut for Balding at Chester and followed up with a win at Royal Ascot in the Buckingham Palace Stakes. The victory in the City of York Stakes was a testament to Never So Brave's potential and the strength of Juddmonte's breeding programme.
No Nay Never, another Juddmonte stallion, won his ninth race at the highest level with Never So Brave's victory. This further solidifies Juddmonte's position as a leading force in thoroughbred racing. With such promising young horses as Never So Brave and Tarriance, the future looks bright for Juddmonte.
