Toronto Blue Jays Claim Infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa from Pittsburgh Pirates

The Toronto Blue Jays have strengthened their roster with the addition of infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Kiner-Falefa is expected to report to the team on Monday, when rosters expand, and will be eligible to play in the postseason.

Kiner-Falefa, 27, has been having a solid season with the Pirates, hitting .264/.300/.332 with 15 stolen bases. His best position is third base, according to both numbers and the eye test, but he has also played various positions in the big leagues, primarily at shortstop and third base.

The Blue Jays could platoon second baseman Andrés Giménez with Kiner-Falefa, given Giménez's weak performance against lefties. Third baseman Ernie Clement has played second base this season and could potentially move between the two positions to accommodate the Giménez/Kiner-Falefa platoon.

Meanwhile, Kiner-Falefa was previously traded to the Pirates from the Toronto Blue Jays last summer for minor-league infielder Charles McAdoo. McAdoo, 23, is currently ranked as the 16th-best prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays' system by MLB Pipeline.

In the Pirates organisation, McAdoo has been promoted to Double-A this year and is playing as an outfielder. He has a batting line of .249/.322/.426 with 16 home runs and 30 stolen bases in 108 Double-A games this year, with most of his games being played at third base.

The Blue Jays are currently leading the AL East with a record of 78-58, while the Pirates are in last place in the NL Central with a record of 61-76. The Yankees hold a de facto three-game lead over the Blue Jays due to the tiebreaker.

The Blue Jays' rosters will expand on Monday, and with the addition of Kiner-Falefa, they will aim to maintain their lead in the division and make a strong push towards the playoffs.
