Flooding Disrupts Northern India, Affecting Thousands and Causing Significant Damage

Heavy rains and flooding have wreaked havoc in several parts of northern India, causing evacuations, road disruptions, and significant crop damage. According to reports, over 20,000 people have been evacuated in Punjab, and nearly 10,000 people were evacuated from the river banks in Delhi as a precautionary measure due to the swollen Yamuna.

The Yamuna has breached its danger mark in Delhi on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people from the river banks. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rain in the region for Wednesday, with more downpours expected in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Widespread flooding has hit several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. The flooding has resulted in a loss of life and property, with the death toll in Punjab rising to 33 since August 1. Over 150,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed in Punjab due to continuous rain and flooding.

Landslides have been triggered by the swollen rivers, damaging many roads and disconnecting parts of the mountainous regions from the rest of India. The Chenab and Tawi rivers have risen above the danger mark at additional spots in the affected regions, causing further damage to roads and potentially disconnecting more areas from India.

The government officials coordinating the evacuation of the population in the affected regions are from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and local Disaster Management Authorities (like PDMA Punjab), who issue warnings and manage evacuation operations amid flooding and heavy rains. Local authorities in states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab are involved in on-the-ground coordination.

In a tragic incident, a woman and her daughter were killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district due to a wall collapsing caused by rains. Educational institutions have been ordered shut and people have been asked to remain indoors due to flood warnings in several regions.

The authorities are working tirelessly to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the evacuated people. The people of northern India are urged to stay indoors and follow the instructions of the local authorities during this difficult time.
