Touring the Ocean Berlin at Rummelsburger Bucht commences in September
In the heart of Berlin, preparations are underway for a unique and ambitious project that promises to be a fusion of architecture, marine life, and education. Known as Ocean Berlin, the construction of this groundbreaking building began in early 2024, spanning approximately 35,000 square meters upon completion.
At the helm of the complex construction is a Japanese company specialising in underwater architecture, tasked with creating the intricate tanks that will house a variety of marine life. The building, set to be completed by April 2026, will include a hotel with 167 rooms, large areas for exhibitions, educational offerings, and catering, making it a hub for marine-themed experiences.
However, not everyone is excited about the project. Animal welfare organisations, including PETA, have voiced their opposition to the practice of removing fish from the sea, transporting them over long distances, and keeping them in small tanks. PETA advocates for animal-free alternatives like digital simulations or robotics, and they, along with other organisations, have rejected the concept and demanded a halt to the project, citing unnecessary animal suffering.
Safety is a central aspect of the project, given the memory of the burst AquaDom in Berlin-Mitte. Coral World, the company responsible for the management and operation of Ocean Berlin, has emphasised that they aim not only to entertain but also to raise awareness for the protection of the seas. They assure that strict safety measures will be in place to ensure the well-being of all marine life and visitors.
As for the political involvement in the realisation of the Ocean Berlin project in Rummelsburger Bucht, no publicly available information has been found to identify which political party is involved or whether such involvement has already been made public.
Guided tours in the shell building are planned to start as early as spring 2026, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the marine world, learn about the importance of ocean conservation, and perhaps reconsider their stance on the project.
