Tourism industry leaders advocate for united actions to boost tourism in Hong Kong

In a post-pandemic context, the annual racing tournament in Macau, which is part of the National Games, is attracting a significant number of visitors. This influx of tourists is also being seen in Hong Kong, where the number of visitors last month reached a post-Covid high of 5.15 million, showing a 16% growth year on year.

The National Games, scheduled to take place between November 9 and 21, will be held in Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong province. While Macau is putting effort into promoting the National Games and the Macau Grand Prix, which is scheduled for November 13 to 16, there are concerns about the number of visitors to Hong Kong during the event.

Caspar Tsui Ying-wai, the executive director of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners, has expressed doubts about whether visitors will come to Hong Kong without additional promotion. He suggests that more effort is needed to attract tourists to the city during the National Games.

Emerging trends in tourism require more promotion, and Tsui is not alone in his sentiments. The coordination and support of marketing efforts for the National Games in Hong Kong is typically managed by the relevant local sports authority or organizing committee specifically established for the event, but the exact organization or person responsible for this in Hong Kong is not specified.

Despite the concerns, the National Games are currently experiencing a surge in arrivals. Some visitors are skipping traditional tourist attractions, indicating a shift in tourist behaviour that requires careful consideration by the authorities.

As the National Games continue, it remains to be seen how Hong Kong and Macau will fare in terms of tourist numbers. The cities are hopeful that the event will bring a much-needed boost to their tourism industries, which have been heavily impacted by the pandemic.
