Tourism Innovation: St. Peter's Order Unveils Fresh Approach in Travel Experiences
In the heart of Germany's coastal region, the picturesque town of St. Peter-Ording is gearing up for a significant transformation. The tourism-reliant town, known for its sandy beaches and vibrant atmosphere, is embarking on a new journey towards a more sustainable future.
The project, dubbed the Tourism Development Concept (TEK), is being developed between September 2025 and June 2026. The Institute for Tourism and Spa Research in Northern Europe GmbH (NIT), based in Kiel, has been commissioned for the task, working in collaboration with Coaching und Beratung Simoneit (CUBFS) from Nordstrand and Destination LAB GmbH, based in Berlin and Flensburg.
Hagen Goetz, chairman of the tourism committee, and Katharina Schirmbeck, tourism director of St. Peter-Ording, are spearheading the development of this new concept. Their goal is to create a sustainable tourism that benefits guests, locals, and the environment, while further developing the destination economically and touristically.
Kai Ziesemer, managing director of NIT, expressed his satisfaction about being entrusted with the project, stating, "We are excited to work on this project and contribute to the future vision of St. Peter-Ording."
The focus of the new concept extends from sustainability to guest structures to quality requirements. Sustainability will decisively shape the future orientation of tourism in St. Peter-Ording. The project aims to involve the population, economy, and other interests in the area, ensuring a transparent process that enjoys broad support.
The St. Peter-Ording Tourism Office will keep the public updated on the progress of the project, inviting active participation from the community. Various participation formats will be employed to ensure a collaborative approach.
It's important to note that the tourism industry in St. Peter-Ording presents challenges for locals, and there are conflicting views on how tourism should develop in the town. However, the team behind the new concept is committed to addressing these issues and finding solutions that benefit everyone involved.
The creation of the concept was awarded through a tender process, with ten renowned offices in the German-speaking area invited to submit a bid in May 2025. The Institute for Tourism and Bath Research in North Europe GmbH (NIT), Kiel, was chosen for the task due to their expertise and commitment to sustainable tourism.
The project will be implemented in a working group with coaching and consulting from Simoneit (CUBFS), Nordstrand, and Destination LAB GmbH, Berlin/Flensburg. St. Peter-Ording is poised for a bright and sustainable future, and the community is invited to be a part of this exciting journey.
