Toy Manufacturer Introduces Wheelchair Model, Collaborates with Paralympian Aaron Fgonzales, Popularly Known as "Wheelz"
Mattel Introduces Inclusive Toy Line with Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair
In a significant move towards representation and inclusivity, toy giant Mattel has unveiled the Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair. The new remote-controlled toy, designed in partnership with five-time Wheelchair Motocross World Champion and Paralympic athlete Aaron Wheelz Fotherington, is set to make a splash in the toy industry.
Born in 1991 with spina bifida, Fotherington has been using a wheelchair since he was 8 years old. His incredible achievements, including performing the first wheelchair flair/backflip 180 and being the runner-up on the premiere season of America's Got Talent: Extreme, have earned him a place in the hearts of many.
The Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair, Mattel's first remote-controlled wheelchair toy, is designed to replicate Fotherington's iconic stunts. It features a ramp and a "wheelie boost" for extra speed, allowing children to recreate the thrilling jumps and stunts that Fotherington is known for.
Mattel's commitment to diversity and representation is evident in the Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair. The toy joins Mattel's Barbie Fashionistas line, which includes dolls with hearing aids, vitiligo, prosthetic limbs, and wheelchairs, reflecting the real-world diversity of children.
In 2017, Mattel made headlines by honouring Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first American Olympian to compete while wearing a hijab, with her own Barbie doll. The company also released a Barbie doll modeled after the actress and activist Laverne Cox. These moves underscore Mattel's dedication to promoting inclusivity and representation.
For Fotherington, the launch of the Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair was a heartwarming moment. Witnessing kids, including those using wheelchairs, having fun at the event was particularly special. He believes that toys serve as educational tools, teaching children about the world and its diverse population.
The Aaron Wheelz Wheelie Chair is now available on Amazon, offering children everywhere the opportunity to enjoy this exciting new toy. As Mattel continues to push boundaries and promote inclusivity, the future of the toy industry looks brighter and more representative than ever.
