In a significant move for the automotive industry and the Czech Republic, Toyota has announced a €680 million investment to expand its Kolin factory. This investment, which is expected to increase the factory's size from 152,000 to 173,000 square meters, marks a significant step in Toyota's global EV strategy and Europe's shift away from combustion engines.

The expansion will include a new production line, welding shop, and paint facility for electric vehicles, making it the first battery-electric vehicle Toyota will build in Europe. The upcoming model, yet to be officially disclosed, is expected to be a new compact SUV. However, it may not be based on the same TNGA-B architecture as the Yaris, as Toyota is focusing on the C, D, and E segments.

The Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, praised Toyota's investment, stating it as a major economic and strategic boost for the country. The automotive industry contributes about 10 percent of the nation's GDP, and this investment is expected to further bolster this contribution.

Up to €64 million ($74.5 million) of the investment will be provided by the Czech Government, with the remaining funds coming from Toyota. The funding for the project will not only expand Kolin's production capacity but also strengthen the country's technological base.

Interest in electric car production drew attention from other countries as well, highlighting the importance of this investment in the European automotive landscape. The investment is a regional commitment by Toyota, signifying a step towards balancing its global EV strategy with Europe's shift towards electric vehicles.

Currently, the Kolin factory produces the Yaris Hybrid and Aygo X. With the expansion and the introduction of the new electric vehicle, Toyota is set to solidify its position in the European market, offering a diverse range of vehicles to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles.

The specific details about the upcoming model are yet to be revealed, leaving automotive enthusiasts and industry experts eagerly awaiting more information. This expansion and the production of Toyota's first battery-electric vehicle in Europe are exciting developments that promise to shape the future of the automotive industry in Europe.
