Toyota will discontinue the GR Supra model in Australia, but its presence continues in the Supercars racing series.
The iconic Toyota GR Supra is set to exit the Australian market later this month, marking the end of an era for the sports coupe that has exceeded expectations set by its predecessors, according to Toyota Australia.
Launched in 2019, the current GR Supra was developed in collaboration with BMW and utilised the same platform and drivetrain as the Z4. However, the fifth-generation Supra's reign will come to an end in early 2026, making way for a new era in the Supra's legacy.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, expressed his sentiments, stating, "The current GR Supra will leave a lasting legacy in the automotive industry."
In its three-year run, the GR Supra has made a significant impact, selling over 1400 units since its local launch in 2019. The sports car is available in three variants: the entry-level GT, the mid-spec GTS, and the top-spec Track Edition.
As for the current GR Supra's power, it boasts 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque.
Looking ahead, the Supra's successor is expected to debut in 2027. Unlike its predecessor, the new 2nd generation Supra will be developed solely by Toyota, marking a departure from the BMW collaboration. The new model will feature a new 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid engine producing around 400 horsepower.
The next-generation Supra will not utilise a V8 engine, unlike the GR Supra that will compete in the 2026 Supercars race series. This Supra variant will continue in racing form, taking on the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang in the series.
Toyota Australia has yet to officially confirm the next generation Supra for production. However, potential customers are advised to place their orders as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
The GR Supra will continue to be a part of the Supercars Championship grid in 2026 and beyond, ensuring its continued presence in the racing world. Production for the current GR Supra will cease approximately three years from now.
As the GR Supra prepares to bid farewell, it leaves behind a sterling legacy that will undoubtedly be a hard act to follow. Its departure marks the beginning of a new chapter for the iconic sports coupe, one that promises to be just as exciting.
