Tracking the Global Spread of COVID-19

Bloomberg has created data visualizations mapping the spread of the coronavirus and its impact on global travel. The visualizations, which provide real-time updates, reveal a significant disruption in air travel due to the outbreak.

As of now, the visualizations show over 20,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus worldwide, with more than 45,000 cases in China alone. The number of deaths due to the virus has surpassed 1,200, with over 400 deaths in China.

The visualizations highlight the impact of the coronavirus on flight operations in China. On January 28, 2020, only less than 10% of flights took off from China, a drastic decrease compared to the same day last year when one percent of flights took off. Nearly one-quarter of domestic flights in China were cancelled on that day.

International flights from China have been reduced by over 90% due to travel restrictions. The visualizations show that the coronavirus outbreak has spread to multiple countries, including the United States, Japan, and South Korea.

The data visualizations indicate that the number of confirmed cases outside of China has reached over 100. The virus has led to a high number of flight cancellations, with the outbreak resulting in a significant increase in flight cancellations.

However, it's worth noting that while the coronavirus has caused disruptions in air travel, other factors like strikes have also led to flight cancellations. For instance, in January 2020, the Dutch airline KLM notably canceled around 100 flights due to a ground staff strike, while Ryanair in Spain experienced strikes that led mainly to delays and baggage issues but few flight cancellations.

In conclusion, Bloomberg's data visualizations offer a clear and comprehensive view of the coronavirus outbreak and its impact on global travel. The visualizations serve as an invaluable tool for understanding the scale and spread of the outbreak and its effects on air travel.
