Traffic congestion prompts police advisory
The A23 motorway in Vienna, specifically between Knoten Prater and the Handelskai junction, is currently undergoing infrastructure construction work. This ongoing project may cause traffic disruptions, but it's crucial for road users to maintain a safe and considerate driving behaviour.
The Elmshorn motorway police have issued several recommendations to ensure the safety of all road users and emergency services personnel. One such advice is to adjust speed in good time and reduce it according to signs, as this helps to minimize disruptions and maintain a smooth flow of traffic.
When lanes are reduced on the A23, the police recommend using the zipper merge method. This method involves driving as far forward as possible next to each other until reaching the narrow point, helping to prevent traffic congestion and accidents. It's important, however, not to merge too early to avoid causing confusion among other drivers.
Construction sites on the A23 also narrow traffic lanes and change traffic guidance and signage. In such situations, it's essential to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front and to be aware of the new traffic rules.
In case of a breakdown or traffic accident in the construction area, it's important to leave the construction site and stop on the hard shoulder if the vehicles are still driveable. If the vehicles are no longer driveable, secure the hazard area sufficiently by placing warning triangles, lights, and wearing a high-visibility vest. However, never stay in the vehicle or between the vehicles when securing a hazard area, as there is a risk of death.
In construction zones, it's crucial to make way for emergency vehicles immediately and form a rescue corridor. On a single-lane road, drive as far to the right as possible to let emergency vehicles pass.
