Tragic bus tour in New York culminates in Niagara Falls, leaving behind a trail of shattered glass and fatalities
On a fateful Friday afternoon, around noon, a tour bus crashed on the New York State Thruway near Pembroke, about 40 miles east of Niagara Falls. The accident, which occurred on April 6, 2023, left five people dead and dozens injured.
The bus, carrying more than 50 passengers, lost control and rolled over on the interstate. Many of the passengers might not have been wearing seat belts, leading to a chaotic scene on the highway. People's belongings and glass were scattered, and some passengers climbed out of the windows to escape.
First responders, translators, and medical personnel were swiftly on the scene to help the injured passengers. They were joined by a nurse and several doctors who were passing by on I-90. The medical personnel organized the treatment of injured passengers efficiently, ensuring that those with critical injuries received immediate attention.
At least 47 passengers were taken to four regional hospitals for treatment of various injuries. The Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo received 21 patients, while the University of Rochester Medical Center took in six. Kaleida Health received 20 patients, distributing them among three hospitals: Buffalo General Medical Center, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, and Oishei Children's Hospital.
One of the survivors, Yu, expressed gratitude for making it through the accident. A witness, Powell Stephens, described a heartbreaking scene at the crash site, with people embracing each other and appearing to break down.
Among the heroes of the day was a bystander named Glinski, who provided aid to a female passenger with a severely injured arm. He used his Under Armour shirt as a makeshift tourniquet, helping to slow the bleeding until medical help arrived.
As of Sunday, 11 patients from the Erie County Medical Center had been discharged, with another expected to be released. However, the loss of five lives serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with travel and the importance of safety measures.
