Tragic demise of a 16-year-old on the train station
In the small town of Geisleden, Thuringia, a sense of shock and sorrow has gripped the community following the tragic death of a 16-year-old girl at Friedland station on August 11.
Initially, the police assumed her death to be an accident. However, it was later revealed that a 31-year-old Iraqi man is suspected of pushing the teenager onto a freight train. The public prosecutor's office in Göttingen is now involved in the case.
The suspect, whose prior judicial status in relation to the victim is not explicitly clear, has been placed in a psychiatric clinic under a detention order. The girl, who temporarily lived in the municipality of Geisleden, was commuting daily to her training place in Friedland, which is located in the extreme south of Lower Saxony, near the state borders with Hesse and Thuringia.
The family, who had fled from Ukraine, lived in the municipality of Geisleden from August 2022 until the end of November of the same year. Markus Janitzki, the mayor of Geisleden, spoke of the girl, saying she was always a cautious girl. The family, from the outset, had suspected it might not have been an accident.
Flowers and candles at Friedland station serve as a poignant reminder of the young life lost. The community and family express outrage and anger over the incident. Two fundraising appeals for the family's funeral costs have been published, and the response has been large. Around 14,000 euros have been collected so far.
Many people have donated online, and many older people have personally handed in money at the town hall in Geisleden. DNA traces of the man were found on the victim's shoulder, providing a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community support in times of tragedy. As the investigation continues, the people of Geisleden and Friedland stand united in their grief and determination to honour the memory of the 16-year-old girl.
