Nine Lives Lost During Ganpati Immersions in Maharashtra

The grand 10-day long Ganpati festival came to an end on Saturday, Anant Chaturdashi, but the immersion of Ganpati idols spilled over into Sunday, resulting in several unfortunate incidents across Maharashtra.

According to officials, at least nine people died during the immersion ceremonies in various locations in the state. The deaths were reported in Thane, Pune, Nanded, Nashik, Jalgaon, Washim, Palghar, and Amravati districts.

In Pune district, five persons were swept away in different water bodies in three separate incidents. Two men were swept away in the Bhama river at Waki Khurd, another at Shell Pimpalgaon, and a 45-year-old man at Khed. Another person slipped into a well in Pune's rural area.

Similarly, five persons were swept away in Nashik district, and three persons in Jalgaon in separate incidents. Tragically, three persons from Mundewadi in Thane's Shahapur taluka were swept away in the Bhargavi river.

One person lost their life in Mumbai's Khairani Road due to electrocution from a Ganesh idol coming into contact with a hanging electric wire.

Three men who were swept away in a creek during Ganpati idol immersion in Palghar district were fortunately saved.

The immersion of Ganpati idols is being live-updated across the state, but the sad news does not stop pouring in. Twelve people are reported missing during various incidents related to the immersion of Ganpati idols in Maharashtra.

Three persons were swept away in a river in Gandegaon in Nanded district, and the bodies of three persons were recovered in Pune district.

As the festivities come to a close, our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones during this unfortunate time. It is a reminder to all of us to prioritise safety during such events, especially when dealing with water bodies and electrical equipment.
