Tragic Incident: Death of Naz Reid's Sibling in New Jersey, Member of Timberwolves Basketball Team
In a tragic turn of events, the basketball community is in shock following the death of Toraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves star Naz Reid. The 28-year-old was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds near the exit of the Paragon Apartment Complex in Jackson Township, New Jersey, on Saturday.
The suspect in this case, Shaquille Green, is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing. Green is being charged with murder and two counts of possession of a weapon. Authorities later located and took Green into custody.
Green and Toraya Reid reportedly lived in Jackson Township and it's unclear if they shared an apartment. It's also worth noting that Green is being held without bail.
Toraya Reid was described as a loving and protective figure in the lives of her siblings. According to TMZ Sports, she treated her siblings as if she was their mother. Naz himself has spoken highly of his sister in the past, praising her for motivating and protecting him while they were growing up in Asbury Park.
In a poignant gesture, Naz shared childhood photos of himself and Toraya on his Instagram Stories on Sunday. He also called Toraya "super protective" in a 2023 interview with Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine.
Naz Reid's career has been on the rise, recently signing a new five-year, $125 million contract to remain with the Timberwolves. The contract includes a player option in 2029-30, per Reid's agents, Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports. Last season, Reid averaged career highs of 14.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 27.5 minutes in 80 games (17 starts).
The Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer commended the investigating agencies for their collaborative efforts in apprehending Shaquille Green.
