Tragic train collision leaves several dead, multiple individuals injured in Egypt
In a tragic turn of events, a train accident occurred on a route between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh along the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The incident, which involved two out of seven carriages derailing, has left at least three people dead and over 100 injured.
The Egyptian Ministry described the accident as a "tragic accident," and the state railway authority reported the incident to the public. Photos from Egyptian news sites show the derailed carriages ending up in a ditch, a stark reminder of the poor condition of Egypt's railway network.
The cause of the accident is suspected to be a dip along the tracks, a recurring issue in Egypt's railway system. Insufficient training of train personnel is another concern often cited as a cause of accidents in the network. Despite its age, Egypt's railway network, one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, spanning approximately 10,000 kilometers, is neglected and plagued by delays in repair work.
The organization responsible for maintaining Egypt's railway network, the Egyptian National Railway (ENR), is involved in ongoing infrastructure and safety rehabilitation projects due to frequent train accidents. Efforts to improve safety include collaboration with international companies and experts in railway technology.
The poor condition of trains and tracks is a recurring issue in Egypt's railway network. In 2002, one of the worst train accidents in Egypt occurred, resulting in over 360 deaths. Insufficient training of train personnel is also a recurring concern, sometimes cited as a cause of accidents.
Delays in repair work are a persistent problem for Egypt's railway network, with long-overdue repair work being delayed. The ENR is working to address these issues and improve safety, collaborating with international partners to modernise the network and ensure the safety of its passengers.
As the investigation into the cause of the accident continues, the focus remains on the victims and their families, and on the need for immediate action to improve the safety of Egypt's railway network.
