Train Experiences Power Outage While Operating on Non-Electrified Track in the Region
In an unexpected turn of events, a regional train encountered a significant incident at Geltendorf station in Upper Bavaria. The train, upon arrival, was guided onto a track without a platform, preventing passengers from disembarking.
The incident, which occurred on a regular workday, involved a regional train. Passengers were safely able to continue their journey by replacement bus service.
Upon realising the issue, the train driver, following instructions from the duty controller, attempted to rectify the situation by directing the train back over a switch to be parked on track 4. However, a signal indicating the powerlessness of the track, apparently overlooked by the driver, led to a further complication.
Due to ongoing construction work, a "temporary protection" had been installed on track 4, rendering the subsequent section of the track powerless. As a result, the train's pantograph became stuck in the installed protection of the overhead line, making further travel impossible.
In an effort to ensure the safety of the passengers, the fire brigade had to evacuate the train. A total of 63 passengers needed to be rescued.
The Bundesstelle für Eisenbahnunfalluntersuchung (BEU), the German federal agency responsible for investigating railway accidents, will typically delve into the causes of such incidents. The BEU will likely conduct a thorough investigation into the events at Geltendorf station.
Furthermore, the federal police have also launched an investigation into the incident. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation, and more information is expected to be released as the investigations progress.
Despite the unexpected incident, it is reassuring to note that all passengers were safely evacuated and continued their journey by replacement bus service. The rail service is working diligently to ensure the safety and comfort of its passengers and to minimise disruptions caused by such incidents.
