Train manufacturer Stadler declined to provide trains to Belarus Railways
In a significant development, the Swiss company Stadler is set to deliver 65 trains (30 electric and 35 diesel) to Belarusian Railways at the end of this week. This delivery marks a continuation of Stadler's presence on the Belarusian market, where they have been operating since 2014.
However, the current conditions have not allowed for the supply of trains to Belarus nor the production of trains in Belarus at Stadler's Minsk plant. The plant, located in Fanipol, has seen a reduction in production due to compliance with the sanctions imposed on Belarus.
Despite this halt, Stadler continues to be the 100% owner of the plant in Belarus and supports its resumption once sanctions are lifted. It is worth noting that no contract has been signed between Belarusian Railways and Stadler regarding this delivery.
Meanwhile, there is no clear information about specific steps regarding potential Russian investors coming to the "Stadler Minsk" plant, as reported by the Belarusian government in September last year.
In a separate development, it appears that the Chinese company investing in Belarusian railways and producing electrical equipment there is not yet specified. The Chinesisch-Belarussische Industriepark "Great Stone" involves multiple Chinese companies investing in high-tech sectors in Belarus, but the exact company related to electrical equipment production for Belarusian railways is not named.
Despite these challenges, Stadler acknowledges the situation and continues to support the resumption of operations at the "Stadler Minsk" plant in Belarus. The plant was not closed but was halted after sanctions were introduced in 2022.
As the situation evolves, it will be interesting to see how these developments unfold and what impact they will have on the future of rail transportation in Belarus.
