In a departure from traditional core exercises like crunches and planks, personal trainer Hayley Madigan and Krissy Cela, co-founder of Oner Active, are advocating for alternative exercises that provide a more holistic approach to core training.

One such exercise is the dumbbell pass-around, a move that involves passing a weight around the waist from one hand to the other, bringing both hands to the front. To perform this exercise, the weight is held just below the chest in one hand with the other hand behind the back. Trainer Hayley Madigan advises keeping the torso as still as possible during the movement. The dumbbell pass-around is done in sets of 2-3 each direction and for a time of 30 seconds.

Another exercise that Madigan favours is the overhead march. To execute this move, stand with feet hip-width apart, holding dumbbells by the shoulders, engaging the core. Extend arms overhead, and raise and lower knees alternately. The overhead march recruits all core muscles and challenges them to resist movement from other areas of the body. It is done in sets of 3 with 10-15 reps on each side.

Madigan also recommends the suitcase carry as an effective core exercise. To perform the suitcase carry, the feet are placed hip-width apart, and the weight is held at the right hand. The exercise involves walking with a heavy weight in one hand for a specified time. Madigan suggests picking a heavy weight for the suitcase carry and to switch on the core during the exercise by tucking the rib cage. Suitcase carries are done in sets of 1-2 each side and for a time of 30 seconds.

These exercises, along with the dumbbell pass-around and overhead march, are some of Madigan's favourites, and she even considers the suitcase carry as a bonus favourite exercise. By incorporating these moves into your core training routine, you can expect to strengthen your core muscles in a more dynamic and functional way.
