The German benchmark index, the DAX, is set to undergo changes in early September, and one of the companies at risk of demotion is Porsche AG. This potential demotion could mark a quick exit for the luxury car manufacturer, which only joined the index three years ago.

To qualify for DAX membership, a company must rank among the top 40 by order book turnover or market capitalization, or among the top 33 for a quick entry. GEA, a German engineering company, appears to have the best chances of ascending, according to index expert Achim Matzke.

If Porsche is demoted, it would need to leave the DAX and enter the MDax in exchange with GEA Group. Sartorius, currently the smallest value in the benchmark index, is the first candidate for demotion from the DAX. If demoted, Sartorius would have to move to the MDax.

The Deutsche Börse only considers shares held by the public in its calculations. Lufthansa, insurer Talanx, and construction software provider Nemetschek are on the cusp of the DAX, but no suitable candidate for demotion is currently available for these "Regular Entry" candidates.

The ranking for the September review is determined from the last 20 trading days in August. The period from August 4 to 29 is relevant for this review. The changes in the DAX family indices (DAX, MDax, SDax, and TecDax) will be announced on September 3 after the US market close and will take effect on September 22.

It's important to note that these index changes are particularly important for funds that physically replicate the indices, as they may need to rebalance and readjust, which could impact stock prices. The last change due to a quick re-demotion was in December 2024, when Covestro AG was forced to leave.

In September 2021, Sartorius was added to the DAX during the expansion from DAX 30 to DAX 40; however, Porsche and Sartorius were set to leave the DAX in September 2023 and be replaced by GEA and Scout24. Scout24 could enter the Dax instead, should Porsche be demoted.

The last change in the Dax due to a regular review occurred in December 2022, when Porsche AG replaced Puma in the benchmark index. If Porsche is demoted, it would mark a significant shift in the German stock market landscape.
