Transformed Modesty into riches: A Punjab farmer multiplied a 2.5-acre landholding into a substantial business empire through cultivating 3 strategically-chosen crops
Transforming Farming in Punjab: Gurmeet Singh's Success Story
In a small village in Punjab's Moga district, Gurmeet Singh has revolutionized farming through intelligent practices and smart crop selection. Born into a farming family, Gurmeet started his journey with just 2.5 acres of land, experimenting with vegetable farming.
Initially, Gurmeet faced challenges like many farmers, including the hailstorm that damaged his tomato crop. However, his diversified strategy allowed him to recover losses and adapt to the changing agricultural landscape.
Recognized as a model farmer in his area, Gurmeet encourages other farmers to shift from monotonous crops like wheat and paddy. He advocates for farming as a professional enterprise, urging farmers to employ hybrid seeds, crop rotation, and intelligent risk management for success.
Gurmeet's well-planned crop rotation model ensures that his land never remains idle, allowing him to harvest three crops per year. He cultivates good-quality hybrid tomatoes from March to June using varieties such as Rani, Yogi, and Uphaar. During the winter season, he grows hybrid cauliflower varieties like Snowball, Giriraj, and Pusa Meghna. In addition, he grows Muskmelon and Watermelon for extra income.
To cater to the demands of urban markets, Gurmeet looks to produce exotic vegetables and high-value crops. He has introduced short-duration Basmati varieties such as Pusa 1509 or PB-1121 into his crop rotation plan, moving away from long-duration rice.
Gurmeet's story serves as an indicator that agriculture, when done intelligently, can be a profitable occupation. He makes a net profit of Rs. 2 to Rs. 3 lakh per acre per year after deducting all costs. His success is not only due to improved seeds or crop selection but also due to intelligent risk management.
Looking towards the future, Gurmeet plans to implement drip irrigation to minimize water consumption. His work, along with initiatives like Hooga Seeds founded by Sowmya Balasubramaniam to preserve traditional, climate-resilient crops, is paving the way for a more sustainable and profitable future for farming in Punjab.
