Transforming a Tour de France road bike into a cargo bike is possible, according to US company Argo, who have introduced a flat pack kit for converting any bike into a cargo bike.
The Argo kit, a revolutionary innovation in the cycling world, promises to convert almost any bicycle into a cargo bike. This US-based product, however, is not the same as the Fy conversion kit, which remains unidentified in search results.
The Argo kit is primarily designed for city bikes and shorter travel, lockable MTB's, not downhill bikes like the Canyon Spectral or Giant Glory. Its compatibility extends to most standard bicycles, with only a few physical restrictions. The frame is made from 6061 aluminium tubing for added control and durability, while the cargo box is crafted from phenolic plywood, a waterproof, paint-free, stronger, and more sustainable material.
The kit comes equipped with a steel kickstand and hydraulic disc brakes that are compatible with e-bikes. The upfront brake uses a hydraulic disc brake with a 180mm disc for optimal stopping power. The Argo kit is compatible with 9mm, 12mm, and 15mm axle standards, covering quick release to super boost at 15mm.
The Argo kit functions like a conventional cargo bike, with the system affixed at the bottom bracket instead of the fork. It requires no proprietary components and can be delivered directly to the consumer. The kit includes a lever suitable for a flat bar, which can be swapped with an existing brake if needed. If a different lever is necessary, the Argo company can supply a cable-actuated splitter or recommend using the Zeno hydraulic split system, although a visit to the bike shop may be required.
Priced at $1399, the Argo kit offers an affordable alternative to entry-level cargo bikes. In fact, it's half the price of some of the best cargo bikes on the market. The kit's potential even extends to converting a Tour de France favorite bike, such as the Specialized Tarmac SL8, into a versatile cargo bike.
The Argo kit aims to democratize cargo bikes, allowing more people to enjoy their benefits. With its sturdy construction, adaptable design, and affordable price, the Argo kit is set to revolutionize the way we use our bicycles.
