Travelling exhibit: #StolenMemory, highlighting pilfered personal recollections

The highly anticipated traveling exhibition "#StolenMemory" is set to make its appearance in Braunschweig, Germany, from August 28 to September 16. The exhibition will be stationed on the square in front of the castle at the Ritterbrunnen.

This thought-provoking exhibit tells the stories of five former inmates whose relatives are still being sought. The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Memorial Site KZ-Außenlager Braunschweig Schillstraße and the Arolsen Archives.

Visitors can expect an immersive experience, with interactive digital elements, QR codes featuring video portraits of relatives, and animated web stories that bring the past to life. The exhibition is also supplemented by information about the Nazi camp system, the work of the Arolsen Archives, and the historical context of what is being seen.

The exhibition is housed in a converted overseas container, whose side walls can be folded open, providing a spacious and engaging environment for exploration.

Two individuals whose stories are featured in the exhibition are Karl Brachl and Karl Bezner. Karl Brachl was arrested in Konstanz in April 1939 and was incarcerated in Dachau concentration camp. The Arolsen Archives hold Karl Brachl's pocket watch, which was taken from him by the Nazis in the camp.

Karl Bezner was delivered to the Neuengamme concentration camp on January 8, 1943, and was categorized as a "career criminal" by the SS. The ring belonging to Karl Bezner, which was taken from him by the Nazis, is kept at the Arolsen Archives and can be returned to his relatives.
