Treatment approaches for adolescents with autism

In a dedicated effort to improve the care and support for young people with autism, a full-day training was conducted by the organisation "ProKom" (Process Coordination). The training, facilitated by Anja Roßmeier from the Network Autism Lower Bavaria/Upper Palatinate GmbH, aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for working effectively with young people with autism.

The training day began with a morning theoretical discussion, setting the foundation for working with young people with autism. The foundation lies in the consideration of their strengths, interests, and individual needs. This approach is crucial in creating a supportive and personalised environment that caters to each child's unique requirements.

The afternoon session focused on practical sensory exercises, facilitated by Anja Roßmeier, a specialist in the field of autism. These exercises were designed to provide hands-on experience and practical insights into the challenges and solutions when working with young people with autism.

Working with young people with autism necessitates understanding, patience, specific knowledge, suitable framework conditions, communication opportunities, time and space, as well as retreat and recovery phases. The training emphasised the importance of these aspects, stressing the need for individualised approaches when working with this group of young people.

Pedagogical specialists from various fields, including General Social Services, Integration Assistance, Separation and Divorce Counseling, Foster Care, School Social Work, Guardianship, and Child Day Care, participated in the training. By bringing together professionals from diverse backgrounds, the training created a rich learning environment, fostering collaboration and shared understanding.

The training aimed to empower participants to provide the best possible care and support for young people with autism. By understanding their needs, adopting patient and individualised approaches, and creating supportive environments, these professionals are better equipped to make a positive difference in the lives of young people with autism.
