Trump expands the list of individuals he intendsto legally pursue, now including Kamala Harris, Beyoncé, and Oprah
In a series of controversial moves, former President Donald Trump has been making headlines for his unconventional approach to politics.
Trump has been vocal about his desire to see high-profile figures, including Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California, Vice President Kamala Harris, celebrities such as Beyonce and Oprah Winfrey, and even current California Gov. Gavin Newsom, added to a list of individuals he wants to see prosecuted.
The president has accused Harris of paying celebrities to endorse her during the 2024 presidential election, a claim he has made multiple times but remains demonstrably wrong.
Trump's calls for prosecution extend beyond political adversaries. He has also directed the Justice Department to launch a wide-ranging investigation into Joe Biden and officials in his administration, based on Republican conspiracy theories about Biden's mental health. This investigation, if it indeed took place, would be unprecedented, as no previous American president has publicly ordered a federal probe of his predecessor.
The ongoing Trump administration investigations also include Media Matters, ActBlue, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.
Trump's administration has also been accused of weaponizing the federal government. Over the last several weeks, a Democratic mayor, a Democratic U.S. House member, the staffer of a different Democratic U.S. House member, a sitting judge, and a labor leader have been criminally charged, detained, or taken into custody by Trump administration officials.
However, federal prosecutors know that bringing criminal charges against political foes based on made-up allegations doesn't work. The Trump administration launched criminal investigations into former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey, but these investigations have yet to result in any charges.
The official White House social media account has also been criticised for promoting North Korea-level propaganda, pushing a twisted message about Trump's determination to seek vengeance against other Americans.
Despite these controversies, Trump's aides and cabinet members continue to support his authoritarian impulses, according to a report by The New York Times. The report states that Trump, more so than during his first term, is surrounded by individuals who often appear willing to follow through on his angriest and most authoritarian impulses.
