Trump ordered to compensate E. Jean Carroll with $83 million following an appeal for defamation accusations

In a historic ruling, a New York appellate court has confirmed that former President Donald Trump must pay author E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million. The payment is a result of Trump's defamation of Carroll, who accused him of rape in the 1990s.

The jury found Trump guilty of defaming Carroll during the 2022 trial and on social media. The presidential immunity granted to Trump only covers "official" acts, not private and personal ones. The 2022 trial occurred before the jury convicted Trump in January 2024 and ordered him to pay the substantial sum.

The payment includes $65 million in punitive damages, a significant amount intended to punish Trump for his actions and deter others from engaging in similar behaviour. The jury initially sought $10 million for emotional and professional damages, but awarded a far greater amount, considering the "extraordinary and shocking facts" of the case as "reasonable."

The 2022 trial was a civil complaint for rape and defamation filed by Carroll against Trump. During the trial, Trump called Carroll a "sick" person and questioned the validity of her story. Trump has since promised to appeal the conviction.

The payment is a result of Trump's repeated verbal attacks against Carroll, which included posts on his Truth Social network accusing her of making up a "Monica Lewinsky-like story" and trying to extort money.

E. Jean Carroll, aged 81, is a journalist and columnist for the American edition of Elle magazine. She accused Trump of raping her in 1996 in a dressing room of a New York department store.

The federal appeals court in the 2nd Circuit rejected Trump's appeal on Monday, September 8, 2024, upholding the original ruling. This ruling marks a significant milestone in the ongoing legal battles between Trump and Carroll.
