Trump suggests further sanctions, hinting that actions will follow if Putin fails to end the ongoing conflict

The international community is gathering in Paris for a crucial meeting aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The summit, set to begin today, will see some leaders attending in person, while others will participate via video link.

At the forefront of these discussions is US President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to hold talks with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today. A press conference is expected at 1300 GMT following these phone talks.

Trump's diplomatic efforts to secure a peace deal in Ukraine appear to have stalled, but he has hinted at potential new Russia sanctions if Russia does not end its involvement in the war. During a recent press briefing, Trump stated, "Whatever Putin's decision is regarding the Ukraine war, the US will either be happy or unhappy, and consequences will follow."

However, Trump remains vague on specific actions he will take if Putin does not cooperate in ending the war. He has only referenced "phase two" and "phase three" regarding potential actions against Russia, but has not elaborated further.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky has been vocal about his intentions to push for new sanctions against Russia. He has emphasised that any sanctions must be tangible and impactful, stating, "Sanctions against Russia, against persons connected with Russia, and strong tariffs and other trade restrictions on Russia."

Zelensky has expressed hope that his discussions with Trump today will lead to the implementation of these new sanctions. However, Putin has shown little inclination to agree to a two-way meeting between Russian and Ukrainian leaders, as suggested by Trump.

In a significant development, Putin attended a military parade in Beijing with Xi Jinping of China and Kim Jong Un of North Korea. This meeting raises questions about Putin's commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict, as he continues to vow to fight in Ukraine if a peace deal cannot be reached.

As the international community gathers in Paris, the focus remains on finding a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis. The outcome of these discussions could have far-reaching consequences for the future of Ukraine and the wider geopolitical landscape.
