Trump voices dissatisfaction over India's Russian oil purchases and counters accusations of ceding India to China's influence
In a move that has strained US-India relations, President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods in response to their continued oil purchases from Russia. The tariff, which includes a 25% base tariff and an additional 25% penalty, has led to a significant deterioration in relations between the two nations.
The tariff was announced following Trump's expressed disappointment with India for purchasing oil from Russia, a move that he perceives as a snub to the US. This decision comes amidst a ongoing tariff war waged by Trump, which has also been a topic of discussion at the SCO Summit, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During the SCO Summit in July 2022, Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump's concerns about the tense US-India relations were not directly mentioned in this context.
Despite the strained relations, Trump's statements indicate a continued friendship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has hinted that India, Russia, and China might be forming a close alliance, a suggestion that has been described as a "turning point" and a sign of a "new world order."
However, no official response from India regarding their perceived leaning towards Moscow and Beijing has been made. Similarly, no mention of a specific apology or trade agreement seeking behavior from India has been reported.
Trump's ongoing concerns about India's oil purchases from Russia have not dampened his optimism about ongoing trade talks with the nation. He remains optimistic that a resolution can be found, and that the two nations can continue to work together in the future.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump commented about India, Russia, and China being "lost" to China. He has also been considering blocking IT outsourcing to India and pushing for the creation of more American call centers.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the US and India will navigate their strained relations and find a path forward.
