Trump's re-election prospects seem dim in the eyes of German foreign policy.

The much-anticipated TV debate between US Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris has been hailed as a positive development for American democracy, following the chaotic performances of President Donald Trump and his rival Joe Biden a week earlier.

The debate, which took place on Wednesday, was described by Green Party foreign policy expert Jürgen Trittin as a win for American democracy. However, he emphasised that it didn't change the outcome of the election.

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, a prominent German politician, summarised the debate as a clash between a Christian, conservative white man from the Midwest and a black rising star from California. Both candidates faced off in a very civilized manner, according to Lambsdorff.

Trittin also sees the remaining TV debates as Trump's last chance. He suggested that if Trump doesn't have any more debates, he's already lost.

The debate's impact on Trump's chances of re-election has been a topic of discussion among political analysts. Johann Wadephul, deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group, stated that the debate looks very bad for Trump. If he recovers quickly, he might have a last chance, but the trend is clearly in favor of Joe Biden, according to Wadephul.

As the election approaches, certain states have emerged as crucial battlegrounds. Florida, for instance, is a real problem for Trump, where Biden's lead is growing, according to Trittin. If Trump can't win Florida, his chances are gone.

The state of Illinois, particularly the city of Chicago, is another critical area for Trump. His threats and plans to send the National Guard there have been met with opposition from city and state officials. Memphis, Tennessee, is also highlighted as a contested battleground, but Chicago stands out as a key challenge for Trump.

FDP politician Alexander Graf Lambsdorff also assesses Trump's situation skeptically. He believes that in all the crucial states, Trump is far behind, but has a chance to change things in the debates.
