Tsleil-Waututh Nation Ponders Gaming Agreement at Hastings Site

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation has made a splash in the economic scene, eyeing a significant expansion with a proposed acquisition of Hastings Racecourse & Casino in Vancouver. This ambitious move sets them on the path to increased economic autonomy, with the casino's location nestled within their traditional lands near Burrard Inlet.

A Monumental Leap Forward

The deal is unfolding under the auspices of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) and Great Canadian Entertainment, with the latter being a premier provider of gaming, hospitality, and entertainment services across four provinces.

Chief Jen Thomas of the TWN expressed her excitement, describing this move as a "big milestone" and a "historic" opportunity for the Nation. She voiced her anticipation to strengthen their economic self-determination and collaborate closely with Great Canadian Entertainment's top brass to wrap up the deal.

A Detailed Deal on the Horizon

At present, an agreement is merely a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with both parties working diligently to finalize the crucial details. The process involves due diligence to assess the feasibility of the acquisition, followed by negotiations for a definitive purchase agreement.

Upon conclusion, the agreement will face several regulatory hurdles, including approvals from gaming regulators and the City of Vancouver, who hold ownership of the Hastings land.

Great Canadian Entertainment's CEO, Matt Anfinson, has expressly shown enthusiasm for the prospective transfer, calling the TWN an "ideal" successor for the casino operations and related real estate interests.

One significant condition is the prolonged transitional period to ensure a seamless handover, with Great Canadian offering continued support during this phase.

Professionals at KPMG Corporate Finance Inc. and McCarthy Tétrault LLP are advising the TWN on the legal and financial aspects of the deal, while McMillan LLP provides legal counsel to Great Canadian Entertainment.

Should the deal materialize as anticipated, it will mark a milestone in the TWN's economic development and signify increased Indigenous participation in British Columbia's gaming and hospitality sector.

Taking the next step in their economic expansion, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation aims to incorporate casino-games, lotteries, and other gambling-trends into their proposed acquisition of Hastings Racecourse & Casino, further solidifying their casino-and-gambling presence in the Greater Vancouver area. With successful mutual collaboration with Great Canadian Entertainment, the casino's new ownership seeks to redefine the gambling landscape in British Columbia's gaming and hospitality sector.
