Tulane coach expresses disapproval following Northwestern's rejection of Hurricane Katrina uniform homage

In a poignant display of resilience and unity, Tulane University's football team secured a 23-3 victory over Northwestern University in their season opener on September 3, 2022, at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans.

The Green Wave, led by head coach Jon Sumrall, held Northwestern to 237 total yards and forced five turnovers, demonstrating a tenacious defensive performance. Quarterback Jake Retzlaff, a transfer from BYU, shone brightly, throwing for 152 yards, rushing for 113 yards, and scoring two total touchdowns.

The game held a special significance for Tulane, as they chose to honour their 2005 team by wearing green jerseys without a decal on their green helmets. This was a nod to the team that played all 12 games on the road with their home games being played at six different stadiums, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005.

In a bid to pay tribute to the city's struggles and triumphs, Tulane requested that Northwestern allow them to wear all-white uniforms without logos, similar to the team's uniform after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. However, Northwestern, as the visiting team, chose to wear white uniforms in the humid Louisiana summer weather.

Coach Sumrall expressed his displeasure with Northwestern for rejecting their request, believing it showed disrespect to the city of New Orleans. He shared videos of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath with his players to give them a real appreciation of what the city has been through.

CNN has reached out to Northwestern for comment regarding the uniform dispute. Tulane's football team is scheduled to face South Alabama on the road next week.

The emergency response to Hurricane Katrina was bungled, leading to nearly 1,400 deaths, over 1 million people displaced, and over $125 billion in damages. The hurricane caused heavy rain, strong winds, and a flood that caused extensive damage. The city of New Orleans, and Tulane University, have since shown remarkable resilience and spirit, embodied by their football team's performance on the field.
