Turkey Advocates for Enhanced Collaboration with China
The SCO Summit, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is not a forum for resolving regional conflicts, such as the one in Ukraine or the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. However, the attendance of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey at the summit does not mean that these issues are being ignored.
Despite the SCO Summit's focus on cooperation among its member states, which include China, Russia, and several Central Asian countries, Erdogan continues to maintain close contact with key players in these conflicts. He is in close contact with both President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, urging all sides to make peace over the conflict.
Turkey's role in brokering the Black Sea grain corridor and prisoner swaps has been significant, demonstrating its commitment to regional stability. Erdogan reaffirmed his stance on negotiations being the only path to peace in the Russia-Ukraine war, but these discussions are not on the official agenda of the SCO Summit.
While at the SCO Summit, Erdogan is also working to expand cooperation with Beijing in various sectors, including trade, energy, health, and digital technologies. This is part of Turkey's increasing efforts to strengthen ties with China.
The Zangezur Corridor agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, signed in August 2025 and mediated by then-US President Donald Trump, is not a topic of discussion at the SCO Summit. However, the agreement, which is seen as a step that will boost trade, open borders, and expand normalization in the South Caucasus, reflects Turkey's broader aim of promoting regional stability and economic growth.
Turkey's efforts to strengthen ties with Beijing, advance peace in Ukraine, and support regional stability indicate its intention to advocate for world peace and stability. Erdogan does not see an East-West division and seeks to build connections across regions. He is also pressing for China's support in shaping a more prosperous international order.
In conclusion, while the SCO Summit is not a platform for resolving specific regional conflicts, Turkey's active participation and diplomatic efforts demonstrate its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and cooperation on the global stage.
