Turkey criticizes U.S. for cancelling visas for Palestinian leaders, deeming it unfair
In a strong statement made on Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Omer Celik, the spokesman for Turkey's ruling AK Party, criticised the U.S.'s decision to revoke visas for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other officials. The move, scheduled before the U.N. General Assembly, has been described as an "unjust move" by Celik.
Celik emphasised that the world is indeed bigger than five, and no one will be able to silence Palestine's voice, quoting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He further expressed his opinion, stating that the prevention of Palestinian officials from attending the U.S. General Assembly is an attempt to make the U.N. meaningless.
The revocation of visas is believed to undermine diplomacy, according to Celik. He also pointed out that the demand for the Palestinian Authority to withdraw its applications to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ), and halt its efforts for the recognition of the State of Palestine, is unjust and unlawful in every respect.
In the same vein, Celik asserted that Erdogan's address at the General Assembly would remain "the strongest voice for the Palestinian cause." The Turkish government, however, has not publicly stated an official position specifically regarding the U.S. government's suspension of visas for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinian officials before the UN General Assembly.
Omer Celik's statement comes at a time when the U.S. move is perceived to weaken the U.N.'s role as a platform where all states' voices are heard. Celik, speaking on NSosyal, stated that trying to silence Palestine in the face of growing international support for a two-state solution will damage peace efforts.
