Turkey to conduct 5G spectrum auction in October, with services commencing in April 2026
The Turkish government has announced that it will hold a 5G spectrum auction on October 16, 2022. The auction will take place at the headquarters of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) in Ankara.
The auction will offer a total of 400 megahertz of spectrum across the 700 MHz and 3.5 gigahertz bands. Eleven different frequency packages will be distributed to operators.
Operators already licensed in Turkey for GSM, IMT-2000/UMTS, and IMT services are eligible to participate in the auction. They will be required to pay for their spectrum in three equal installments.
To strengthen the domestic industry, the government has introduced mandatory thresholds for local technology use in the 5G infrastructure. At least 60% of products used in the 5G infrastructure must be locally produced, while 30% must qualify as nationally developed communication products.
From April 30, 2029, operators will be obliged to pay 5% of their annual revenues to the BTK. The minimum valuation for the auction is set at $2.125 billion.
Mobile internet speed in Turkey is expected to increase at least tenfold with the implementation of 5G. This could transform the way businesses operate, promising speed and industrial transformation.
5G technology will enable machine-to-machine communication that could transform industrial production processes. The requirement for local technology use is expected to reduce reliance on foreign technology and support domestic manufacturing.
Operators can submit their offers for the 5G spectrum auction starting October 9, with the final deadline set for October 16 at 09:30 a.m. local time (GMT+3). The tender documentation for the auction costs ₺1 million ($24,308).
The new 5G licenses will remain valid until December 31, 2042. The rollout of 5G networks in Turkey is expected to be a significant step forward for the country's digital future.
