Turkey's Defense Minister welcomes Ukraine's top security official for a crucial meeting
In a significant development, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, visited the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Thursday for a key meeting with Defense Minister Yasar Guler.
The meeting, held at the Turkish Defense Ministry, marked another step in the growing strategic partnership between Turkey and Ukraine. This partnership has been evident in Turkey's mediation efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue and seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
During the meeting, specific details of the discussions between Guler and Umerov were not immediately available. However, photos from the visit show the officials in deep discussions, suggesting that important matters were under discussion.
Umerov's visit to Ankara comes after the third round of peace talks held in Istanbul in May and June 2025, marking the first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine since 2022. These talks, hosted by Turkey, underscore the country's role as a key mediator in the ongoing conflict.
In addition to its mediation role, Turkey has also provided military support to Ukraine. This support includes the delivery of Turkish-built Ada-class corvettes, with the "Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi", one such vessel, launched in Istanbul in August 2024. The Ukrainian first lady, Olena Zelenska, and Rustem Umerov were present at the launch ceremony.
The delivery of these corvettes is a significant part of Turkey's military support to Ukraine. The strategic partnership between the two countries has also been demonstrated through Umerov's recent signing of a memorandum in Denmark in July 2025, aimed at increasing the production of unmanned systems (drones) between Ukraine and partners like Turkey. This collaboration is expected to deepen cooperation in this area.
Umerov also had a separate meeting with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during his visit to Turkey. The details of this meeting are not yet known.
The strategic partnership between Turkey and Ukraine, as demonstrated through these meetings and events, is a testament to the growing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the face of ongoing regional challenges.
