Turkish President Erdogan conducts significant discussions in China, extends an invitation to Russian President Putin for a visit to Turkey.
In Tianjin, China, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a range of regional and global issues.
Putin commended Turkey's mediation efforts in the ongoing Ukraine war, stating that three rounds of direct talks in Istanbul have made some progress on the humanitarian track. Erdogan, in turn, highlighted the progress in economic cooperation between the two nations. The Russian President was invited to visit Turkey soon.
Erdogan also met with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan separately on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. The meetings focused on the peace process in South Caucasus, with Erdogan expressing satisfaction with the progress in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
Erdogan and Aliyev emphasized the importance of coordinating their regional development initiatives in the coming period. The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also participated in the meeting between Erdogan and Aliyev.
In another development, Erdogan discussed peace efforts in South Caucasus with Pashinyan. The meeting was held at a hotel as part of Erdogan's bilateral engagements in China. Erdogan reiterated Turkey's support for peace, stability, and development in the region while continuing to contribute to the process.
Moreover, Erdogan noted that Ankara evaluates steps to increase cooperation between Turkey and Armenia. The meeting between Erdogan and Pashinyan addressed Turkey-Armenia relations in light of steps toward permanent stability and peace in the South Caucasus.
Erdogan also met with leaders from other SCO member states, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Maldives, Myanmar, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. The current dialogue partners of the SCO are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and these countries.
Putin pointed to shared interests in key regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Transcaucasia. Erdogan emphasized the strong ties between Turkey and Russia, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in these regions. The two leaders also discussed the potential for increased cooperation in areas such as energy and transportation.
The meetings at the SCO Summit underscored the ongoing efforts of regional leaders to address complex issues and foster cooperation in the face of geopolitical challenges. As the dialogue continues, it remains to be seen how these discussions will shape the future of the region.
