Caroline Wahl, the author of the acclaimed book "22 Lanes", published in 2023, initially felt apprehensive about the film adaptation. However, her concerns were soon alleviated as she found the film captivating, particularly the shimmering summer atmosphere that mirrored her feelings during the writing process.
The film, directed by Xavier Koller, follows the story of sisters Tilda and Ida, who are dealing with their mother's alcoholism. The script was written independently of Wahl, but she was given the opportunity to provide input.
The filming location for "22 Lanes" is in Munich, Germany. Luna Wedler, who stars as Tilda, spent time swimming to better understand and embody her character. Wedler felt empathy for Tilda from the beginning, as Tilda takes on the mother role for Ida due to their mother's occasional attacks.
The filming process involved the photography team of the Austrian Press Agency (APA) and Constantin Film. The first shot of the film is underwater footage in a swimming pool, raining heavily.
The film conveys a sense of hope despite the sisters' problems. Ida only swims when it rains, while Tilda swims 22 lanes as a source of inner peace.
The cast includes Luna Wedler, Laura Tonke, and Jannis Niewoehner. The director, Mia Maariel Meyer, successfully captures the shimmering summer atmosphere from the book.
The film closely follows the details of the book, which has been a bestseller and won multiple awards. Wahl felt comfortable relinquishing control of her work to the film production company.
