Two athletes from KSG enjoy a distinctive sports journey
In the heart of Brazil, at Praia de São Francisco, the German national paddling team took part in a thrilling ocean racing event. The team, consisting of eight individual paddlers and five six-man teams, bravely faced the challenging conditions.
The event, which attracted a total of 820 paddlers from 36 nations, kicked off with a grand opening ceremony. The German team had the honour of leading the nations' parade, as Germany comes first alphabetically. The ceremony was meticulously planned, featuring live orchestra music, a fireworks display, and a performance of the Brazilian national anthem. A samba group also performed, transforming the crowd into a dancing, colourful mass.
The German women's team, which included Lara Ehlis and Lydia Elstermeier from the Canoe Sports Club (VfK), competed on the fourth day of the event. They faced headwinds, particularly on the return leg of the 24-kilometer course. Despite the challenges, they persevered, securing the ninth place in the overall ranking of the event.
It's important to note that the outrigger canoes used in the event, Va'a, originated from Polynesia. These canoes, with their unique design, added an authentic touch to the competition.
The victorious nations, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti, had significantly more experience paddling on open seas and surfing waves than the German team. However, the German team showed great determination and resilience, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the world of paddling.
The athletes will have the opportunity to compete again next year, as the Sprint World Championships will be held in Singapore. This upcoming event promises to be another exciting challenge for the German paddling team.
Despite the varying weather conditions during the event, with high waves and wind in the initial days, followed by a decrease in wind and scorching sun despite the Brazilian winter, the German team showed their mettle and spirit, making their country proud.
