U.S. Barred French Scientist Over Disapproval of Trump, Claims Press
In an incident that has caused international concern, a French researcher was denied entry to the United States on March 9, 2023. The researcher, who was working for the French National Center for Scientific Research, was traveling to Houston for a conference.
According to reports, the researcher's denial of entry was due to critical text messages about President Donald Trump that were found on their device during a "random" check by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The CBP has the authority to stop any foreign national from entering the U.S.
This case has raised questions about the safety of traveling to the U.S., particularly for researchers. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, an immigration policy expert, expressed concern about the safety of researchers visiting the U.S. under Trump's administration on March 20, 2025.
The CBP reportedly went through the researcher's phone and bags during the check, and their devices were seized. This incident is not the first high-profile case of people being stopped at the U.S. border, suggesting a more aggressive posture by American authorities.
The U.S. government's actions in this case may reflect a broader pattern of purging anyone who's not loyal to Trump's perverse worldview from the U.S. government, as some critics have claimed.
In another related incident, Fabian Schmidt, a German national with permanent residency in the U.S., was violently interrogated and subjected to sleep deprivation upon being detained in Rhode Island.
The U.S. government has been accused of illegally flying people without trial to a notorious prison in El Salvador under a deal with the country's authoritarian president and the Trump regime. The U.S. government claims the people sent to El Salvador were gang members, but it's impossible to verify this claim. Some of the people sent to El Salvador were asylum seekers who had never broken the law, according to sworn declarations filed on Wednesday.
These cases have sparked concern about the safety and freedom of speech for foreign nationals visiting the U.S. under Trump's administration. It remains to be seen how these incidents will affect international relations and the U.S.'s reputation as a hub for scientific research.
