U.S. safety ratings see Toyota and Honda at the front, excelling in automotive safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) have announced the latest round of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings for various car models. Among the top performers are Toyota, Honda, and their luxury brands Lexus and Acura.
The IIHS and HLDI perform crash tests on vehicles to determine their safety ratings. To receive a Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must achieve Good ratings in several crash tests, including the driver and passenger side small overlap front tests, original moderate overlap front test, and the updated side test. Additionally, the vehicle must have an Acceptable or Good rating for headlights standard. To step up to a Top Safety Pick+ rating, a vehicle must also achieve Advanced or Superior ratings for daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.
Toyota and Honda lead in the United States with the most Top Safety Pick ratings. As of August 28, Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus have nine Top Safety Pick models, while Honda and its luxury brand Acura have eight. Some of the Toyota models with Top Safety Pick ratings include the Camry, Highlander, Sienna, Tundra Crew cab, Tundra Extended cab, and the Lexus UX, NX, NX PHEV, and RX. Honda models with Top Safety Pick ratings include the Accord, CR-V, HR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Acura Integra, MDX, and RDX.
Acura, Lexus, and several other luxury brands also have models that have received Top Safety Pick ratings. Audi, Genesis, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, and Volvo are other automakers receiving one or more Top Safety Pick ratings. Furthermore, Audi, Genesis, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, and Volvo have models that have received Top Safety Pick+ ratings.
The criteria for a Top Safety Pick+ rating also include Advanced or Superior ratings for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention during both daytime and nighttime. A photo of IIHS crash test vehicles was provided by the IIHS in the article.
In conclusion, Toyota, Honda, and several other automakers are leading the way in vehicle safety with their Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ rated models. These ratings provide consumers with valuable information to make informed decisions when purchasing a new vehicle.
