Uber concludes $300 million investment in Lucid's autonomous taxi project
In a significant move for the automotive industry, Lucid Group has secured a $300 million investment from Uber Technologies. This investment, announced in July, marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two companies on a next-generation premium worldwide robotaxi program.
The investment will bolster the development of an autonomous robotaxi platform, with Lucid's advanced software-defined vehicle architecture set to be a key part of the service. The Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system will also be integrated, ensuring the robotaxi's autonomous capabilities.
Uber's extensive network and fleet management capabilities will be utilised in the robotaxi service, which is expected to debut in a major US city in 2026. The platform will be exclusively operated on Uber's ride-hailing platform, with Uber's plan including the deployment of over 20,000 Lucid vehicles within six years as part of the program.
The robotaxi services by Lucid Group will prioritize safety and scalability. The development of the autonomous robotaxi platform is set to be further bolstered by the strategic funding.
Interestingly, Lucid's EV technology platform, known for its redundant electrical and control architectures and impressive range, will be a key component of the robotaxi's design. This is a testament to Lucid's commitment to innovation and leadership in the automotive industry.
In a related development, Lucid entered a collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in May to progress EV technology and autonomous driving capabilities. This collaboration underscores Lucid's dedication to driving advancements in the automotive industry.
The robotaxi service will participate in the Just Auto Excellence Awards, an event that celebrates innovation, leadership, and impact in the automotive industry. Entering the awards showcases Lucid's achievements, elevates its industry profile, and positions it among top leaders driving automotive industry advancements.
In July, Lucid also updated its DreamDrive Pro suite with new advanced driver assistance features. This update further cements Lucid's position as a pioneer in the development of autonomous vehicle technology.
With the robotaxi service set to debut in a major US city in 2026, the collaboration between Lucid Group and Uber is poised to revolutionise the way we travel. The platform will be manufactured at Lucid's facility in Arizona, US, with the launch scheduled for late 2026. The future of transportation looks bright, and Lucid and Uber are at the forefront of this exciting new era.
