Uber rides frequently get cancelled for a Chicago woman due to her disability, she claims
In the Lakeview area of Chicago, Becca Shrier relies on Uber for her daily transportation needs. However, she has been facing significant difficulties due to the company's service.
Shrier, who uses a cane to get around and can only stand for short periods of time, has encountered issues with Uber drivers not adjusting their pickup spots to accommodate her disability. This has resulted in missed appointments, including a doctor's appointment that books four months in advance.
Uber drivers, upon seeing Shrier with her cane, often make a U-turn to avoid picking her up. This is inconvenient for drivers in many locations, and they often refuse to do so. Shrier has attempted to communicate her need for a pickup on her side of the street through the Uber app, but drivers often do not comply.
Going out for a casual event like coffee is a struggle for Shrier. She has missed several appointments due to Uber's inability to accommodate her disability. Shrier has attempted to address this issue with Uber multiple times, but the company has not provided an official statement regarding her complaints.
Uber drivers participating in the Rideshare Access Program (RAP) for people with disabilities in Chicago are sponsored by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). However, Pace, the organisation responsible for the RAP, is not aware of others facing similar issues.
When contacted by News Chicago, Uber representatives did not provide an official statement regarding Shrier's complaints. Shrier can recite the standard responses she receives from Uber when she complains about this issue, indicating a lack of resolution.
Despite these challenges, Shrier remains hopeful that Uber will address her concerns and improve their service for people with disabilities.
