UK automobile production DECLINED by 26.6% in June - First half of the year also SHOWN A DECLINE by 7.6%
Struggling Car Industry in the UK Amidst Transition to Electric Vehicles
The car industry in the UK is facing a challenging period, with car manufacturers grappling with a host of problems. According to reports, over a third of the total car production in the first half of 2024 was accounted for by electrified cars, including Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Hybrids. However, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK remains static, with a lack of interest shown by private buyers.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) believes the UK auto industry is transitioning to build the next generation of electric vehicles. The SMMT urges the industry and government to work quickly to deliver these commitments and create an industrial strategy that fosters growth in the economy. The new government's commitments to gigafactories, a decarbonised energy supply, and a faster planning system are expected to help boost the UK's competitiveness and sustain employment in the sector.
Despite these efforts, car production in the UK has been on a consistent decline. In December 2024, production decreased by a significant 27.1%. This trend continued in February 2025, with a 7.6% decrease, marking the 12th consecutive month of decline. October 2024 saw a 15.3% drop, marking the 8th monthly decline this year. The decline in June 2024 was even more pronounced, with production decreasing by 26.6% compared to the previous year.
The decline in production is attributed to carmakers retooling lines for electrified cars and model changeovers, such as the new MINI and Qashqai. However, the production of more BEVs is being questioned due to uncertainty about who will buy them. The production of electrified cars in the first half of 2024 was down by 7.7%, the same as the overall drop.
There is a persistent issue with forced car makers to build EVs no one wants. High interest rates and reluctance by buyers, particularly private buyers, to pay high prices continue to impact the car manufacturing industry in the UK. In 2024, there is no direct information indicating which specific car manufacturers increased their production in the UK. However, the British automotive industry is undergoing consolidation, with an accelerating shift to electric vehicles and new government industrial strategies supporting advanced manufacturing and automotive sectors.
The litany of excuses for reduced car manufacturing numbers in the UK since Covid and Ukraine disruptions to supply chains continues. The SMMT believes the UK auto industry is transitioning to build the next generation of electric vehicles. The challenge now lies in fostering interest and demand among private buyers to ensure the sustainability and growth of the industry.
