Ukrainian President Zelenskyy declares fresh assaults, penetrating deeply into Russian territories.
In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, significant events have unfolded over the past few days.
Ukrainian forces have made notable progress at the front, according to military spokesman Viktor Trehubov. They are successfully preventing Russian troops from capturing targets in the Donetsk region and halting further advances into the Dnipropetrovsk region. However, the situation remains tense, with Russian units reportedly encircled in one section.
Unfortunately, civilian casualties continue to rise. In the latest overnight attack in Saporischschja, one civilian was killed, and at least 25 others were injured. In the Pokrovsk district of the Donetsk region, Russian troops are accused of targeting civilians, as footage allegedly shows a Russian soldier shooting an elderly man in his own garden. The victim was clearly in civilian clothing and unarmed, and the incident is described as a direct violation of the Geneva Convention on the protection of civilians.
Internationally, the Lithuanian military is reinforcing security at border control points with Russia and Belarus by installing obstacles on unused roads. The European Union is exploring how frozen Russian assets could ultimately be used to finance Ukraine's defense and reconstruction after the war.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin is in China for a multi-day visit, participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which will last until Monday. Prior to his meeting with Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The United States, under former President Donald Trump, had considered deploying private American military companies to Ukraine to help secure defensive positions and support a peace agreement or long-term ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Now, the USA could support a European engagement with private US military firms to build Ukrainian defense positions along the future border and secure military bases if a peace deal or lasting ceasefire is reached.
In a positive development, Ukraine is receiving three powerful generators worth around one million dollars from supporters in the US. According to the governor of the region, Oleksandr Prokudin, these generators will provide thousands of people in Cherson with access to medical care and heat even under difficult conditions.
It is also worth noting that Russia is not only targeting military facilities but also civilians and residential areas. In reality, Russia fires dozens to hundreds of drones and missiles at civilian targets almost daily.
Moscow's Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov has announced a continuation of extensive air strikes against Ukraine, targeting military facilities and the defense industry. Gerasimov also announced that the General Staff will determine the objectives of Russian troops for the fall over the weekend.
As a part of defensive measures, the so-called "Dragon Teeth" - pyramid-shaped concrete barriers for tank defense - were erected as part of the Baltic Defense Line. These structures aim to provide additional protection against potential tank invasions.
These events underscore the complex and evolving nature of the conflict, with both military progress and civilian casualties being reported regularly. The international community continues to respond in various ways, offering support and exploring potential solutions to bring an end to the conflict.
