In a significant development, the UK's new Minister for European Union Relations, Nick Thomas-Symonds, has embarked on a mission to Brussels to reaffirm the UK's commitment to strengthening ties with the European Union.

The appointment of Minister Thomas-Symonds, made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, comes as a step towards resetting the UK-EU relationship. The Minister's primary focus will be to lead future discussions with the EU.

During his first full day in the role, Minister Thomas-Symonds met with the UK Ambassador to the EU and addressed staff at the UK Mission to the EU. He also held a meeting with EU Commission Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič, acknowledging the close relationship between the EU and the UK and expressing anticipation for their discussions.

The meeting aims to establish a foundation for further discussions between the UK and the EU, with both parties emphasizing the importance of a strong UK-EU alliance, particularly in light of shared global challenges such as climate change and illegal migration.

EU Commission Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič highlighted the importance of making the most of existing agreements between the EU and the UK. He looked forward to discussing ways to strengthen cooperation.

The Minister's visit to Brussels follows a positive introductory call between the two officials on July 7th. This meeting marks the beginning of a series of high-level discussions between the UK and the EU, with other UK Ministers also holding introductory calls with their EU counterparts.

In addition to his Brussels visit, Minister Thomas-Symonds accompanied the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary to the NATO Summit in Washington last week. There, he met with European leaders including Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Turkey, as well as US lawmakers, including the Chair and Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe.

However, Minister Thomas-Symonds did not mention any specific agenda items for his meeting with EU Commission Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič or any previous meetings with European leaders or US lawmakers. He also did not mention any recent bilateral meetings between UK and EU officials.

As Minister Thomas-Symonds prepares for more meetings with EU colleagues in the coming months, it is clear that the UK is committed to maintaining and strengthening its relationship with the European Union. The Minister expects to engage more with EU colleagues in the coming months, with the hope of finding common ground and addressing shared challenges.
