Unacceptable act on Asian food delivery worker in Bucharest denounced by President Nicusor Dan: "Such behaviors are unacceptable"

In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has strongly condemned the assault of an Asian food delivery worker in Bucharest. The attack, which took place on the evening of August 26 in District 2, was filmed by the attacker and gained widespread attention online.

According to reports, the 20-year-old attacker struck the delivery worker in the face and shouted xenophobic slurs. The delivery worker, from Bangladesh, sustained minor injuries and required up to two days of medical care. The case is being investigated as racially motivated.

The assault occurred against a backdrop of heightened anti-immigrant rhetoric in Romanian politics. Vice President of AUR, Dan Tanasă, who recently posted on Facebook advising Romanians to reject food deliveries from workers from Africa or Asia, has been at the centre of the controversy.

Civil society groups denounced the post by Dan Tanasă, and Marian Godină filed a criminal complaint accusing him of inciting discrimination. However, in a new statement, Dan Tanasă accused media of exaggerating his influence and rejected claims that his posts may have encouraged the assault.

Dan Tanasaș argues that violence in Romanian cities stems from failed government policies, not his remarks. He insists his position is about protecting Romanians' safety, not targeting people based on origin.

The confrontation ended when an off-duty police officer, Andrei Jianu, intervened and restrained the suspect with the help of colleagues. The attacker has been ordered into 30 days of pre-trial detention.

President Dan stated that words inciting hatred against foreigners have real and sometimes dramatic consequences. He expressed solidarity with the worker and condemned the rise of xenophobic rhetoric in Romania.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of promoting unity and tolerance in society. It is crucial that public figures use their influence responsibly and refrain from making statements that could incite hatred or discrimination.
