Unacceptable violence towards an Asian delivery worker in Bucharest denounced by President Nicusor Dan: "These actions are unbearable"
Romanian President Condemns Xenophobic Assault on Asian Food Delivery Worker
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has strongly condemned an assault on an Asian food delivery worker in Bucharest on August 26. The attack, which was filmed by the attacker, occurred in District 2 and left the delivery worker with minor injuries that required up to two days of medical care.
The attacker, a 20-year-old man, shouted xenophobic slurs and demanded the delivery worker return to his country. An off-duty police officer, Andrei Jianu, intervened and restrained the attacker with the help of colleagues.
The assault came against a backdrop of heightened anti-immigrant rhetoric in Romanian politics. The AUR vice president, Dan Tanasă, wrote a post on Facebook denouncing food deliveries handled by workers from Africa or Asia. However, the search results do not provide information about any person who published a Facebook post recommending Romanians to reject food deliveries from people from Africa or Asia.
In response to the incident, President Dan expressed solidarity with the delivery worker and condemned the rise of xenophobic rhetoric in Romania. He emphasized that it is not hate but solidarity, hospitality, and tolerance that define Romanians.
Dan Tanasă rejected claims that his posts may have encouraged the attack and insisted his position was about protecting Romanians' safety, not targeting people based on origin. He argued that violence in Romanian cities stems from failed government policies, not his remarks.
In a new statement, Dan Tanasă accused media of exaggerating his influence and argued that he would use his hypothetical power to build hospitals, highways, and decent salaries for Romanians. The post by Dan Tanasă was denounced by civil society groups and a criminal complaint was filed accusing him of inciting discrimination.
President Dan praised the police officer for his swift and courageous intervention, drawing a parallel with the experiences of Romanians working abroad. He called the assault an intolerable act of xenophobic violence and urged authorities to treat it as a hate crime. The attacker has been ordered into 30 days of pre-trial detention, and the case is being investigated as racially motivated.
President Dan expressed his hope that the incident would serve as a wake-up call for Romanians to reject xenophobic rhetoric and embrace a more inclusive society. He reiterated that anyone living and working in Romania deserves protection and equal treatment.
