Unattended bonfire in a barrel ignites a garage blaze in Farmington
Fire Destroys Detached Garage in Farmington
A fire that ravaged a detached garage in Farmington took place on Saturday afternoon at 4401 Kyte Road. The incident occurred on the property of Bruce Haug, a 68-year-old resident of Shortsville.
The blaze started from an unattended burn barrel, as investigators are still reviewing the cause of the fire. Fortunately, the fire did not result in any injuries.
Deputies from the Ontario County Sheriff's Office responded to the fire just before 5 p.m., followed by Manchester firefighters and crews from Shortsville, Farmington, and Clifton Springs. The garage was fully engulfed in flames when deputies arrived, but the fire was successfully extinguished before it could spread beyond the detached garage. Deputies used water from the residence to help contain the fire.
The owner of the site where the unattended heating pit stove likely caused the fire is Michael J. Schmitt.
