Unauthorized dental services done by a Florida woman led to her arrest, as police claim she employed superglue on her victims' teeth.
In Hillsborough County, Florida, Emely Martinez, a 35-year-old woman, was arrested earlier this year for allegedly performing unlicensed dental work. The charges against Martinez include fraud, practicing dentistry without a license, and other offenses.
Martinez, who is accused of using cyanoacrylate glue, also known as "crazy or superglue," to install phony veneers on victims' teeth, is believed to have affected dozens of individuals across multiple counties. The cost for her alleged dental services was about $3,000 for an entire set, while real veneers can cost more than $1,000 per tooth.
The American Dental Association issued a warning in 2024 noting that procedures performed by unlicensed veneer technicians have the potential to cause "irreversible harm." This warning comes as multiple victims of Martinez's dental work have incurred hefty bills for emergency dental work to reverse the damage. Some victims had to wait for infections to clear before getting their teeth fixed.
It is unclear how many victims received services from Martinez, but the report suggests she may have changed her name and created additional businesses to hide the fraud. The Tapp Inn Beauty Bar in Pinellas Park advertised Martinez as a veneer technician, despite her lack of licensing and schooling.
The Pinellas Park Police Department issued a warning about the dangers of receiving dental work from unlicensed technicians, emphasising the importance of dental work being performed by licensed professionals to avoid potential harm and financial costs.
