"Unaware of the event" - the youthful musicians picked for confidential unveiling of a previously unheard Mozart composition

In an extraordinary turn of events, the Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra has brought to life a previously undiscovered composition by the legendary Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The piece, titled Ganz kleine Nachtmusik, was performed at its German premiere on September 21, 2024, at the Leipzig opera house, drawing international attention and excitement from music fans around the world.

The exact source of the composition was kept secret until two days before the premiere performance. The manuscript, a seven-movement work for string trio, was written by Mozart in the mid to late 1760s. The search results do not provide direct information about who discovered the old score or where it was found.

The performance, which attracted a crowd of 400-metre-long queues outside the opera house, featured musicians David Geer, Vincent Geer, and Elisabeth Zimmermann. The trio, who are members of the Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra, expressed their pleasure and honor at giving the modern public premiere of the piece.

Vincent Geer shared, "We initially thought the performance would be an ordinary gig, but it turned out to be a significant event in classical music history." Elisabeth Zimmermann described the music as a "nice short piece" that "invites your mind to wander."

The first modern performance of the piece took place at a private event in Salzburg on 19 September. However, it was the public premiere in Leipzig that truly captured the imagination of audiences. Many remarked that it felt as though Mozart had dropped new music for 2024.

David Geer expressed his joy that many people, both young and old, were enjoying the performance. Elisabeth echoed this sentiment, stating, "It's wonderful to see so many people coming together to appreciate this beautiful piece of music."

The performance of Ganz kleine Nachtmusik garnered significant media attention, with news outlets from around the world covering the historic event. The Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra's performance has undoubtedly added a new chapter to the rich legacy of Mozart's music.
